Can I receive private pay home care services when I live in an assisted living facility?
Yes, you can receive private pay home care services while living in an assisted living facility. Many residents choose to supplement the care provided by the facility with additional private caregivers for:
Personalized one-on-one care (e.g., companionship, mobility assistance)
Help with activities of daily living (ADLs) beyond what the facility provides
Specialized care (e.g., dementia care, post-surgery recovery)
It’s important to check with the assisted living facility’s policies, as some have rules about outside caregivers.
What is the difference between Private Duty home care and Home Health care?
1. Private Duty Home Care (Non-Medical Care)
Focuses on personal care and assistance with daily activities (ADLs).
Services include bathing, dressing, meal prep, companionship, transportation, and light housekeeping.
Paid out-of-pocket (private pay) or covered by long-term care insurance.
Can be provided by home care aides, and/or certified nursing assistants, personal caregivers, or companions.
No time limit on services—can be ongoing as needed.
2. Home Health Care (Medical Care)
Provides skilled nursing and therapy services under a doctor’s orders.
Services include wound care, medication management, physical therapy, and post-hospital recovery.
Typically covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or private health insurance.
Provided by licensed nurses, therapists, and medical professionals.
Usually short-term and designed for recovery or rehabilitation.
